How to Extend Service Life of Zirconia Ceramic Valves

Zirconia ceramic valves are often operated under complex installation and running conditions. Once failure occurs, disassembly and troubleshooting of components can be difficult. It may further affect system operation, process stability, regulating performance and environmental‑protection emission. Therefore, proper type‑selection, daily operation and maintenance are of great practical significance for extending the service life of zirconia ceramic valves. Several proven practical methods are introduced below.

1. Thoroughly Clean the Piping System

When a new system is commissioned or restarted after overhaul, residual welding slag, rust, solidified slurry deposits, iron wire, cloth scraps and other foreign matters remain inside pipelines. If impurities enter valve throats and guiding sections, they may trigger blockage, valve core jamming or even cracking of ceramic components, which counts as the most frequent failure source for ceramic valves. Before start‑up, the whole pipeline shall be purged and cleaned to remove all solid contaminants and prevent hard particles from damaging ceramic sealing pairs.

2. Reasonable Valve Nominal Size Selection

With the same flow rate, smaller valve bore brings higher medium velocity. High‑speed fluid aggravates erosion and abrasion on sealing surfaces of ceramic core and seat. Calculate and select valves based on CV flow coefficient. Appropriately upsizing valve bore within process allowable range helps reduce fluid velocity, relieve erosion and protect ceramic parts.

3. Shift Erosion Damage to Non‑sealing Areas

Redirect the most severely eroded zone to secondary non‑sealing positions so as to safeguard sealing surfaces and throttling working faces of valve core and seat. Take 3‑piece ceramic ball valve as example: heavy medium erosion concentrates on lower inlet area. Periodically reverse and reinstall the ball core to distribute wear over different surfaces, making full use of each working face of ceramic components and prolong overall service life.

4. Optimize Structural Design of Valves

Early ceramic regulating valves mostly adopted 2‑piece construction, while the industry has widely upgraded to mature 3‑piece structure nowadays. Three‑piece ceramic ball valve features dual‑seat double sealing. Some models are equipped with inclined transition flow passages to mitigate direct medium impact against ceramic sealing surfaces and lower erosion risk. Prioritize products with optimized proven structure during project type‑selection.

5. Adopt Proper Opening Operation Strategy

For newly commissioned ceramic valves, run at approximately 80% large opening at first. Erosion and wear caused by residual pipeline impurities will act on non‑sealing areas of valve core. After pipeline contaminants are fully flushed away, adjust opening to slightly above normal working opening.

As continuous medium abrasion consumes valve core, actual flow output will gradually rise under identical opening. Reduce valve opening step‑by‑step accordingly. This method maximizes utilization of all working surfaces until irreversible damage appears on root and sealing face of valve core.
