Why Ceramic Valves Are Gaining Popularity|Ceramic Material Advantages & Social‑Economic Benefits - Juchang Precision

Why Are Ceramic Valves Becoming More and More Popular?

Industry Background Behind the Rise of Ceramic Valves

Metal valves have been used in numerous industrial sectors for hundreds of years. Despite repeated improvements in structure and materials, inherent material limitations make it harder for them to satisfy increasingly demanding modern‑industrial working conditions. Introducing engineering ceramics into valve manufacturing represents a highly valuable technical innovation for the valve industry.

Engineering ceramics feature low deformation rate and higher overall bonding strength than ordinary metals. Small ionic radius and high ionic valence of ceramic crystals bring high tensile strength, elastic modulus and hardness. Nevertheless, early‑stage ceramics suffered from high brittleness and difficult machining, which restricted large‑scale adoption. Over the past decade, continuous progress in martensitic phase‑transformation toughening, composite‑material technology and nano‑ceramic technology has greatly reduced brittleness and substantially improved toughness and strength, paving the way for mass‑market application of ceramic valves.

Social and Economic Benefits Brought by Ceramic Valves

  • Improve sealing performance of industrial piping systems and minimize medium leakage, making positive contributions to industrial environmental protection.

  • Ceramic raw materials are widely available with controllable costs. High‑performance ceramics can be produced from common elements such as aluminum, silicon and carbon, saving large amounts of metal and rare mineral resources.

  • Using advanced engineering ceramics for valve seals and wearing parts greatly enhances wear resistance, corrosion resistance and sealing performance, effectively extending valve service life.

  • Reduce frequency of valve maintenance and replacement, improve safety and stability of the whole equipment, lower labor intensity for on‑site maintenance staff and cut equipment upkeep costs.

Analysis on Common Casting Defects of Ceramic Pneumatic Three‑Way Diverter Valve Castings

Castings are core components of ceramic pneumatic three‑way diverter valves, and casting quality directly determines overall valve operational safety. During actual manufacturing, various casting defects often restrict product quality improvement. The main problems are listed below:

  • Melting equipment lacks sufficient control over molten iron composition and sand‑mixing equipment has poor running stability. Molten iron composition is affected by coke, furnace type, air volume and raw materials. Resin‑bonded sand performance is highly sensitive to ambient temperature as well as resin and hardener dosage. Without re‑cooling treatment for reclaimed sand, sand temperature will become excessively high and weaken mold strength, causing mold swelling and raising risks of shrinkage cavities and shrinkage porosity.

  • Falling sand grains inside mold cavity and molten iron impact during pouring lead to sand holes and sand inclusions. Slags generated in melting process enter mold cavity together with molten iron in solid or liquid state and further produce slag holes.

  • Nitrogen content in molten iron rises with temperature and drops along with higher carbon equivalent. Combined action of nitrogen and hydrogen easily forms gas pores, which constitute the main cause of porosity defects in castings.

  • Insufficient rigidity of molding board and uneven placement cause mold deformation and uneven mold parting surfaces. Large gaps on parting surfaces after mold closing result in dimensional and shape defects on castings.
